EKTIMIS - HAITI EARTHQUAKE DISASTER RELIEF & SUPPORT ADVISORY
On Tuesday, January 12 (2010), a major earthquake ravaged the already impoverished nation of Haiti. The magnitude of loss - human and property - will prove to be very significant, as events continue to unfold. For those of us who are not in Haiti, times like these should lead us to appreciate what we have; times like these also call for a show of compassion of the highest order.
Unfortunately, an event like this brings out the worst in some people - opportunists with bad intentions and people without any measure of moral character. It is important to be aware of these, while providing any form of support that you can. If you are considering and are able to support the massive assistance that will be required to help the people of Haiti, the best methods to do so without falling victim to devious characters include the following:
- Check your local broadcast media channel website - they are a safe source of relief provider information.
- Visit the Catholic Relief Services website and make a donation using the donation links on the home page.
- Visit the American Red Cross website (or your local country Red Cross website).
- Visit the Baptist Global Response website and make a donation to the Haiti Relief Fund.
- Visit the Doctors Without Borders website and donate to support the ongoing Haiti relief efforts.
- Visit the Samaritan's Purse - International Relief website and make a donation to support Haiti Relief
- Visit the Haitian Health Foundation website and make a donation. All donations are applied to helping the people, especially children, of Haiti.
- Visit the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund website and make a donation online, or send a check to one of two addresses listed on the "About The Fund" page.
- Check with your local place of worship, especially if it is integrated with an established infrastructure and an accountable process for collecting and providing aid to global disaster victims.
* Be careful surfing the Internet and making a donation through unverifiable or questionable websites.
The above specific entities are well established and deemed reputable - to the best of our knowledge. Furthermore, the above are simply a guideline offered by EKTIMIS. You may and should take additional protective steps that you deem appropriate to ensure that your support is directed to the people of Haiti. If you are not able to render any financial support at this time, then remember the people of Haiti and their loved ones in your prayers - they need it.
